馬修．羅賓斯執(zhí)導(dǎo)的本片是一部具有喜劇味道的群戲，主角是住在一幢瀕臨拆除的老房子的五位房客，有年老也有年輕，有男也有女，有白人也有黑人，仿佛是大社會(huì)的縮影。這群個(gè)性不同的房客，被一位從事不動(dòng)產(chǎn)開發(fā)生意的商人用盡辦法逼迫他們搬走。基于相同的生存需要，他們團(tuán)結(jié)起來抵抗外辱。而促使他們繼續(xù)堅(jiān)持下去的動(dòng)力，是一群突然闖入他們生活的小小宇宙飛船。本片雖是一個(gè)充滿想象力的故事，但對(duì)于今天曼哈頓區(qū)一些下層社區(qū)住客的生活實(shí)況也有所反映。因此本片以科幻片方式來表達(dá)“不輕言放棄希望'的正面主題，倒也有相當(dāng)?shù)默F(xiàn)實(shí)意義。
